Pop superstar Madonna and her then-husband, Guy Ritchie, adopted their first child, David, from Malawi in 2006. She returned to Malawi in 2009 to adopt her daughter Mercy after their separation. She then adopted twins Stella and Estere from the same nation eight years later. Interestingly, Madonna has a daughter, Lourdes, from her marriage to Carlos Leon, and a son, Rocco, from her marriage to Guy.

Madonna traveled to New York City in 1978 to pursue a career in modern dance after being born and reared in Michigan. She soared to solo success with her debut studio album, Madonna, after acting as a drummer, guitarist, and vocalist in the rock bands Breakfast Club and Emmy. Not running out of gas, she went on to have a string of hits, including the all-time bestsellers Like a Virgin and True Blue, as well as Grammy Award winners Ray of Light and Confessions on a Dance Floor.
